The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the work of nannies across the globe and has created a very unsettled time for nannies who are similar fears and concerns about their future.

Are you worried about the security of your job?

Are you missing your charges?

Have you become unemployed?

Are you struggling with self-care during this time?

Has COVID-19 triggered feelings of anxiety or stress which is having a negative impact on your health and well-being?

If so, you are not alone. Many nannies are asking the same questions and experiencing the same fears and concerns. It is a tough time for everybody. However, there are still many ways in which you can remain optimistic and productive as we face this pandemic.

If you are currently self-isolating at home, furloughed, or have some spare time while you are laid off work, then these five tips are for you.

Consider Virtual Nannying

Many nannies have pivoted their services online. Yes, that is right. The new age of virtual nannying has become an overnight success. Even though you are not physically able to change nappies, assist with mealtimes or feedings, you can still offer some services via online video platforms such as WhatsApp, Google Hangout, Skype, Go to Meeting, Zoom, or  FaceTime. Virtual nannying can help keep you connected to your charges and even provide their parents with a few hours a day to get work or other tasks completed. Virtual nannies can help with schoolwork, play games, read books, do arts and crafts and much more. Plus, your charges will likely love to see your face and share a part of their day with you.

Take Five Minutes to Meditate

Five minutes might not sound like a long time, but it is enough time to help set the mood for the rest of your day. As nannies, we rarely get a break or a minute to sit down, let alone meditate. So why not utilize this extra time and put a bit of focus on self-care. Our usual busy lives are full of distractions with our regular on the go movements. A few moments of stillness can really help to improve focus and productivity, alleviate stress, and enhance mindfulness and allow you to be the best version of yourself.

Take an Online Course

Now is probably the best time for you to invest in your skill set. So why not use this time to acquire new skills by taking an online course. Many platforms such as Groupon, Free Learn, Open learn and New Skills Academy, are offering online courses now. Now is the time to take the opportunity to learn something new or brush up on previous skills. Tackle Your To-Do List

Remember that never ending to-do list that has been sitting on your bedside table for months? Yes, that list. Now is the time to pick it back up and start ticking off the tasks. From deep cleaning your home, to reorganizing your wardrobe, to tackling those dreaded home maintenance tasks, now is the time to do what you have not had time to do. You can even start that fitness workout plan that you said you were going to start months ago. Tackling your to-do list will help give you a sense of achievement, while practicing self-discipline, and enhancing your organization skills.

Build Your Nanny Network

It is natural to want to socialize and network with other nannies as even pre-COVID-10, our role is typically an isolated one. Use this time to build you network and connect with other nannies in your area and beyond. There are many Facebook nanny groups and nanny forums where you can connect with nannies who can understand what you are going through. You could even use this time to update your LinkedIn profile or even set up an Instagram account or blog showcasing your nanny expertise.

COVID-19 is bringing many challenges to many people. It’s also providing the opportunity to slow down, refocus, catch up, and start something new. Take advantage of this time to keep connected to your charges, catch up on life, and prepare for the post COVID-19 nanny world.
